Pahari Baskets

Made from abundantly available raw materials in Pahari region like nagal (substitute of bamboo) or chalaf ki patti (pine needle grass), these baskets are one of its kind. These baskets are known as tokri or chakki in the local language. Dried pine leaves fallen on ground are collected, boiled, wiped, arranged in order, and tied with cotton threads and needle in a circular movement to shape them. Nagal is sturdy than bamboo and requires skilful handling while basket weaving. The basket maker pares its outer layers in thin strips which are then woven into baskets.
